What happened
During the final approach to Santo Ângelo Airport, the flight crew encountered challenging weather conditions characterized by crosswinds reaching 35 knots with accompanying gusts. As the aircraft type approached runway 29, the wind conditions caused the plane to float along the runway surface. This resulted in the touchdown occurring significantly further down the runway than intended.
Following the contact with the runway, the crew attempted to apply braking maneuvers to decelerate the vehicle. However, the remaining runway length was insufficient to bring the aircraft to a halt. The plane subsequently overran the end of the paved surface and exited the airfield into a nearby ravine. While the aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss, all 13 occupants were successfully rescued from the wreckage without reported fatalities.
Findings
An analysis of the event indicates that the landing procedure was executed improperly. The primary contributing factor was the crew's failure to execute a go-around despite the unstable approach and the extended touchdown point caused by the wind.
