Introduction
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has released an interim statement regarding an accident involving a Hawker 800XP aircraft with registration 5N-AMM, operated by Flints Aero Services Limited. The incident occurred on 3 November 2023 at Ibadan Airport, Oyo State, Nigeria. The report reference number is FASL/2023/11/03/INTR/02, published on 3 November 2025.
Flight Details
The aircraft departed Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (DNAA), Abuja at 19:41 h for Ibadan Airport (DNIB) under an Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) flight plan. On board were 10 persons, including 2 cockpit crew and 1 cabin crew, with a fuel endurance of three hours. At the start of the flight, the First Officer served as Pilot Flying (PF) and the Captain as Pilot Monitoring (PM).
Accident Sequence
At 19:49 h, 5N-AMM contacted Ibadan Air Traffic Control (ATC) and received clearance for an RNAV approach. At 20:13 h, the crew reported the runway in sight. Approximately at 20:15 h, the First Officer handed control to the Captain, citing an inability to continue the approach due to poor visibility. The Captain assumed control and continued the approach. At 20:16:45 h, the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) captured the sound of the aircraft impacting the ground, after which the recording ceased.
Aftermath
At 20:18 h, Ibadan ATC attempted to contact 5N-AMM without success. About five minutes later, the Airport Fire Service was notified and subsequently located the aircraft in an overgrown grass verge on the right side of runway 22. The aircraft sustained substantial damage. All passengers and crew disembarked safely without injuries. The accident occurred at night in Visual Meteorological Conditions (VMC).
Investigation
The NSIB reported that a draft final report has been compiled and is undergoing technical review. Upon completion, it will be circulated to stakeholders for comments as per ICAO Annex 13 requirements. This interim statement is issued on the second anniversary of the accident in accordance with Annex 13 provisions. The investigation's sole purpose is to prevent future accidents and serious incidents, not to apportion blame or liability.
