What happened
On July 10, 2006, a Fokker F-27 operated by Pakistan International Airlines was performing a scheduled flight from Multan to Lahore. The flight departed from Multan Runway 36 at 12:05 Pakistan Standard Time (PST). The aircraft was carrying a total of 45 people, consisting of 41 passengers and 4 crew members.
Shortly after the departure, air traffic controllers and observers on the ground noticed the aircraft flying at an extremely low altitude while drifting to the right in a banked position. During this period, the control tower attempted to communicate with the flight crew, but all attempts to establish radio contact were unsuccessful.
Following the loss of communication, reports were received from local residents indicating that an aircraft had impacted the ground approximately 2 km northeast of the runway. The impact resulted in a complete loss of the airframe due to fire. There were 45 fatalities and no survivors.
Findings
Witnesses and air traffic control observations noted that the aircraft was maintaining a very low altitude and drifting right in a bank immediately following takeoff.
