What happened
During an approach to Kawthaung Airport, the aircraft encountered challenging meteorological conditions characterized by rainfall and horizontal visibility reduced to approximately one kilometer. The flight was performing its landing phase when it maintained an excessive altitude during the approach.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft landed significantly down the length of the 1,260-meter wet runway. Due to the late touchdown point and the slippery surface, the pilot was unable to decelerate the aircraft within the available runway distance. The aircraft subsequently overran the end of the runway at a speed of 80 knots, eventually coming to a stop against a river bank.
All 45 occupants on board were successfully rescued following the incident. While there were no fatalities, seven passengers sustained slight injuries during the overrun.
Findings
- The primary factor in the accident was the excessive approach height, which led to a late touchdown on a short, wet runway.
