What happened
During an approach to Villa Gesell Airport, the flight crew elected to discontinue their initial approach. After completing a circuit of the airfield, the decision was made to land on the opposite runway. During the subsequent takeoff from runway 10, which was noted to be wet, the aircraft failed to decelerate sufficiently within the available runway length.
As a result of the overrun, the aircraft sustained significant structural damage, specifically losing its nose landing gear and the right main landing gear. The momentum of the aircraft carried it several dozen meters past the runway end, where it ignited. Despite the intensity of the fire, all 90 occupants were successfully evacuated from the aircraft before the fire could cause total destruction of the airframe.
Findings
- The runway surface was wet at the time of the incident.
- The aircraft was unable to stop within the remaining runway distance following takeoff.
