Engine failure and crash during takeoff from Lop Buri Air Base

1 fatality • Lop Buri AFB, Thailand • Takeoff (climb)

An aircraft experienced an engine failure shortly after departing Lop Buri Air Base, resulting in a crash and one fatality.

What happened

During the initial climb phase following departure from Lop Buri Air Base, the aircraft experienced a failure of its left engine. This mechanical malfunction triggered a significant roll to the left side of the aircraft. As the roll progressed, the left wing made contact with the runway surface.

Following the wing strike, the aircraft lost stability and became uncontrollable. The flight path deviated from the runway, leading to a crash a short distance further down the field. The accident resulted in one fatality among the occupants. The remaining four crew members sustained serious injuries during the impact.

Findings

  • The primary sequence of events was initiated by the failure of the left engine immediately after takeoff.

Probable cause

The loss of power in the left engine caused an uncommanded roll and subsequent loss of control.
