Accident Overview
On 10 September 2018, a Bell 206 L4 helicopter, registration 8R-GTR, operated by Air Services Ltd, suffered an in-flight engine failure while on a gold pickup mission. The aircraft was approaching Hicks Camp in the Karouni region of Guyana at approximately 17:30 UTC. The pilot performed an autorotational landing, resulting in no injuries to the pilot or two passengers.
Flight History
The helicopter departed from Eugene F. Correia International Airport (EFCIA) on its first flight of the day. During the initial takeoff, the control tower advised the pilot that the engine was emitting smoke. The pilot returned to base, where a ground check was conducted with the engine running. By that time, the smoking had ceased, and the ground crew found no cause for the issue. The pilot then departed for Hicks Camp, a 45-minute flight.
About ten minutes before touchdown, the pilot noted a minor fluctuation in the engine oil pressure gauge. Shortly thereafter, the oil pressure dropped to zero and a chip light illuminated. The aircraft was over rainforest at the time, but the destination was in sight, so the pilot elected to continue to the destination.
Engine Failure and Autorotation
During the final approach, at approximately 70 feet above ground level, the pilot heard a loud bang and the helicopter lost engine power. The pilot immediately initiated an autorotational descent. The aircraft touched down with no further incident.
Fire and Damage
After touchdown, a fire started in the engine nacelle, which the pilot extinguished. The only damage to the aircraft consisted of cowling penetrations resulting from the engine failure event. There was no other impact damage.
Injuries and Occupants
