What happened
Shortly after departing from Erdenet Airport, a twin-engine aircraft entered a period of ascent through heavy fog and reduced visibility. During this climb, the plane collided with a mountain slope situated approximately several kilometers to the west of the airfield at an elevation of 2,800 meters.
The impact caused the structural failure of the aircraft. There were no survivors among the 28 fatalities, which included 16 adults and 12 children.
Findings
Investigations into the accident determined that the primary factor was controlled flight into terrain occurring during the initial climb phase while operating in adverse weather conditions.
