What happened
During an approach toward Khabarovsk under conditions of restricted visibility, the flight crew experienced a loss of navigational orientation, causing the aircraft to deviate southward. While operating at an altitude of approximately 850 meters amidst poor weather, the crew failed to maintain sufficient clearance from rising terrain. The aircraft subsequently collided with a mountain slope measuring 1,050 meters in height, located roughly 145 km southeast of Khabarovsk in the Lazo district. The impact caused the total disintegration of the airframe. There were 28 fatalities among the occupants, with no survivors reported.
Findings
Investigation into the accident highlighted that Air Traffic Control was unable to pinpoint the precise location of the aircraft, which prevented effective assistance from being provided to the crew. It is believed that the engines ceased operation following fuel exhaustion. Furthermore, the combination of difficult terrain and low visibility prevented the crew from executing an emergency landing attempt.
