What happened
On July 27, 1953, an unidentified aircraft was intercepted and destroyed while entering North Korean airspace. The intercepting pilot, flying a USAF F-86F-30 Sabre, engaged the target and shot it down. Following the engagement, the aircraft lost control and entered a steep dive, eventually crashing in the Mao-erh-shan area within the Jilin province of China.
The flight was carrying 21 passengers, all of whom were killed in the crash. Among the deceased were high-ranking officers from the Soviet Navy who were traveling from Port Artur to Vladivostok. At the time of the incident, the US pilot reportedly believed the aircraft belonged to the North Korean Air Force.
Findings
Investigations into the event determined that the primary reason for the destruction was that the aircraft was shot down by a US Air Force fighter pilot during its approach into North Korean territory. The timing of the incident coincided with the signing of the armistice intended to conclude the Korean War.
