Incident Overview
On 31 August 2025, at 13:43 UTC, a De Havilland Dash 8-300, registration ZS-DHA, operated by CemAir, was conducting a scheduled commercial passenger flight from São Vicente Island (GVSV) to Praia International Airport (GVNP) on Santiago Island. The aircraft was in the fourth sector of the day, carrying 54 passengers and 3 crew members.
In-flight Event
During cruise at flight level FL100, the crew heard a noise from the number 1 engine, immediately followed by an overspeed indication of the propeller and a reduction in power. The crew identified the situation as a failure of the left engine and promptly executed the memory actions for an engine failure/fire, feathering the propeller and shutting down the affected engine. They then applied the procedures from the Quick Reference Handbook (QRH), declared a MAYDAY to Sal Air Traffic Control, and coordinated cabin actions with the chief flight attendant.
Descent and Landing
The aircraft initiated a controlled descent and prepared for an approach to runway 03 at Praia International Airport (GVNP). The aircraft landed safely at 14:22 UTC. The aircraft remained under control at all times, and after landing, it taxied under its own power to the parking position. Passenger disembarkation proceeded normally.
Consequences
No injuries were reported among passengers or crew, and no damage was recorded to the aircraft or airport infrastructure.
Investigation
The Institute for Prevention and Investigation of Aeronautical and Maritime Accidents (IPIAAM) was notified on the same day. An investigation team was dispatched to gather technical and operational evidence, conduct interviews, and analyze documents. The investigation concluded that the event did not provide added value for safety improvement and the process was closed. No probable cause was determined.
