Runway excursion of medical transport aircraft at Yogyakarta-Adisujiptel Airport

No fatalities • Jakarta-Halim Perdanakusuma, Indonesia • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft conducting a medical repatriation flight veered off the runway during landing at Yogyakarta-Adisujipto Airport, resulting in significant structural damage.

What happened

During a night-time medical transport mission, an aircraft was operating a flight from Yogyakarta-Adisujipto Airport to Jakarta-Halim Perdanakusuma Airport. The mission was being conducted for the Indonesian Red Cross and was transporting a patient, two doctors, two companions, and three crew members.

Upon landing on runway 24 under marginal weather conditions, the aircraft experienced a skid on the wet runway surface. After traveling approximately 1,300 metres, the aircraft veered toward the right and exited the paved surface. As the aircraft moved onto soft ground, the right main landing gear was severed from the airframe, and the left main gear suffered a partial collapse. The aircraft then underwent several impacts with the ground, which caused the left wing to bend and resulted in the right engine partially separating from its pylon.

Findings

  • The aircraft sustained damage beyond repair.
  • There were no fatalities and no injuries among the eight occupants.
  • Wet runway conditions contributed to the loss of directional control during the landing roll.

Probable cause

The aircraft veered off the runway after skidding on a wet surface during its landing roll.
