What happened
A cargo operation traveling from Takhtamygda to Kyzyl-Syr, carrying one passenger, experienced a mechanical failure while flying through cloud cover. During the cruise phase, the left engine ceased functioning, prompting the pilot to initiate an emergency diversion toward Aldante.
As the aircraft approached the airfield, the crew encountered difficulties deploying the landing gear. In response to this technical issue, the captain opted to perform a go-around maneuver. Because of the mountainous terrain surrounding the airport, the pilot attempted a steep left-hand turn. At an altitude of approximately 15 to 20 meters, the aircraft entered a left bank and subsequently stalled. The plane struck a snow-covered field in the vicinity of the airport, resulting in the total destruction of the aircraft and five fatalities.
Findings
Investigators identified the primary failure as the loss of power in the left engine for reasons that remain unconfirmed. The investigation also noted that icing conditions and the challenging flight path required by the surrounding mountains contributed to the accident during the approach.
