An aircraft crashed short of the runway at Moscow-Vnukovo after both engines failed during final approach following multiple go-arounds and a reported fuel shortage, resulting in one fatality.

What happened

During an approach to Moscow-Vnukovo Airport, the flight crew received instructions to hold over the area due to adverse weather conditions. The pilot made four separate attempts to land but was compelled to execute a go-around each time. After approximately 75 minutes in the pattern, the pilot notified air traffic control that the aircraft was low on fuel. Assistance was provided because one of the radio compasses was out of service. During the final approach, both engines failed simultaneously. The loss of thrust caused the aircraft to stall, and it impacted the ground a few hundred yards before the runway threshold.

One passenger was killed in the accident, while all other occupants were successfully rescued. The airframe was written off as a total loss. Most of the passengers on board had traveled to Moscow to participate in celebrations for the October Revolution.

Probable cause

The accident was caused by double engine failure resulting from fuel exhaustion.
