What happened
The incident involved a scheduled operation that was initially cancelled out of Voronezh because of adverse meteorological conditions. The aircraft departed two days later on a ferry flight destined for Moscow-Vnukovo. Upon entering the approach phase, deteriorating weather forced the crew to enter a holding pattern over the area. After remaining in this stack for more than two hours, the pilot notified air traffic control that fuel reserves were critically low and requested an immediate landing clearance.
Shortly after this declaration, the aircraft crashed at Yamshchina, located approximately 12 kilometers northwest of Vnukovo Airfield. The impact resulted in the deaths of all five crew members on board. At the time of the accident, seventeen other aircraft were also holding in the vicinity, waiting for weather conditions to improve sufficiently for a safe landing at Vnukovo Airport.
Findings
The official investigation identified fuel exhaustion as the primary cause of the accident. The prolonged delay caused by poor visibility and weather constraints led to the depletion of fuel reserves before the aircraft could complete its approach and landing.
