What happened
During an approach to Lajes Airport, the crew encountered extremely difficult flying conditions characterized by heavy rainfall, low cloud cover, and nighttime darkness. As the aircraft type was on short final for runway 16, the pilot did not maintain sufficient altitude above the terrain. Consequently, the plane impacted a hilltop situated approximately 1,500 meters before the runway threshold, resulting in a post-impact fire.
The accident resulted in the deaths of all 68 occupants. Among those lost were members of the Orfeón Universitario choir from Venezuela, who were traveling to Barcelona, Spain, for an international music festival. The impact and subsequent fire led to the total destruction of the aircraft.
Findings
At the time of the accident, the Azores Islands were experiencing the aftermath of hurricane 'Emmy'. This weather system brought significant wind gusts reaching 30 knots and heavy precipitation to the area. The combination of low visibility and terrain proximity during the descent was a critical factor in the impact.
