Incident Overview
A Lockheed Hudson aircraft, named 'Petunia', was conducting a local test flight with a crew consisting of two mechanics and one pilot, Captain Gibson-Lee. Shortly after takeoff, the left engine failed. The pilot decided to return to the airport for a safe landing.
The Accident
Upon returning, the runway was occupied by a Douglas DC-3, forcing the pilot to execute a go-around. During the go-around, the aircraft overflew the runway but was unable to gain sufficient altitude. At the end of the runway, the aircraft struck telephone wires and crashed in flames onto a house.
Casualties and Injuries
The crash resulted in the deaths of a young honeymooning couple who were in the house. The two mechanics were unhurt. Captain Gibson-Lee was seriously injured and died from third-degree burns ten days later. The aircraft was destroyed by fire.
Probable Cause
The official investigation determined the probable cause to be engine failure.
