Aircraft crash into Guanabara Bay after stall following takeoff from Rio de Janeiro (LV-SEC)

What happened

The incident occurred immediately after liftoff from Rio de Janeiro-Santos Dumont Airport. The aircraft, identified by the name Francisco Mendez Gonçalves, experienced significant difficulties in accelerating and climbing following departure. Unable to gain adequate speed or altitude, the plane entered a stall and subsequently impacted the water surface of the Bay of Guanabara. The airframe sank after the impact. Emergency response teams successfully rescued all 13 occupants from the water. Medical assessments indicated that six individuals sustained serious injuries as a result of the accident.

Findings

Official investigations concluded that the primary factor leading to the crash was a mechanical failure during the takeoff roll. Specifically, a partial collapse of the undercarriage caused the propellers to make contact with the runway surface. This friction prevented the aircraft from achieving the necessary velocity and lift required for a safe climb after liftoff, directly resulting in the stall and subsequent water impact.
