Engine failure leads to crash near Tyumen-Plekhanovo Airport

No fatalities • Tyumen, Russia • Flight

An aircraft experienced a loss of engine power during cruise flight, resulting in a crash into a wooded area near Tyumen-Plekhanovo Airport.

What happened

Shortly after departing from Tyumen-Plekhanovo Airport, the aircraft was maintaining a cruising altitude of approximately 200 meters. Approximately 22 minutes into the flight, the engine suffered a sudden loss of power, causing the plane to descend rapidly.

In an attempt to recover, the crew performed an engine restart procedure; however, this effort failed to restore propulsion. The aircraft subsequently impacted trees and came to rest in a forested region. There were four injuries reported among the occupants following the impact.

Findings

Investigations into the mechanical failure determined that the accident was caused by the internal destruction of the engine. This failure originated from the fatigue peeling of the nitrided layer, which led to the subsequent breakdown of the teeth on the fixed gear wheel.

Probable cause

The engine failed due to internal component destruction caused by fatigue-related peeling of the nitrided layer and damage to the fixed gear wheel teeth.
