What happened
During a local training mission at the Chita-Cheryomushki Air Force Base, an aircraft was performing maneuvers under the direction of the crew. While the aircraft was on its final approach to runway 33, it descended below the required altitude and made contact with the ground before reaching the runway threshold.
Following the impact, the crew successfully executed a go-around procedure. The aircraft completed a subsequent circuit of the airfield and managed to land a few minutes after the initial incident. Although the aircraft was declared a total loss due to damage sustained during the ground strike, there were no injuries reported among the two crew members involved in the flight.
Findings
- The aircraft was operating at an insufficient altitude during the final approach phase.
- The primary factor in the accident was the low approach altitude which led to the ground strike.
