Fatal accident involving oil exploration flight due to passenger interference

2 fatalities • Karaganda, Kazakhstan • Flight

An aircraft conducting an oil field exploration mission crashed during low-altitude flight following unauthorized cockpit interference by an intoxicated passenger.

What happened

A special mission intended for oil field exploration experienced several delays prior to departure because the three scheduled passengers did not arrive at the airfield on time. Upon their eventual arrival, the passengers were in a state of intoxication and continued to consume alcohol throughout the duration of the flight.

During the mission, one of these passengers was permitted to occupy the co-pilot's seat. While the aircraft was flying at an altitude of approximately 100 meters, the passenger reached out and manipulated the control column. This action caused the aircraft to enter an uncontrolled descent, leading to a high-impact collision with the ground. The subsequent impact triggered a post-crash fire that consumed the airframe.

As a result of the accident, there were two fatalities among the occupants. Additionally, four injuries were reported following the crash and the resulting flames.

Probable cause

The aircraft lost control during flight because an intoxicated passenger moved the control column.
