Fatal aircraft accident during return to departure point

2 fatalities • Bácsbokod, Hungary • Flight

A flight ended in a fatal crash after deteriorating weather conditions forced the crew to abort their mission and return to the origin airport.

What happened

During the flight, the crew encountered increasingly difficult meteorological conditions characterized by heavy fog, which resulted in a low cloud ceiling and significantly diminished visibility. Due to these environmental challenges, the decision was made to abandon the intended route and proceed back toward the point of departure.

While the aircraft was maintaining a low altitude during this repositioning maneuver, the crew executed a right-hand turn. During this turn, the tip of the right wing made contact with the terrain. The impact caused the aircraft to crash, subsequently resulting in a post-crash fire. There were two fatalities among the crew members onboard.

Findings

  • Deteriorating weather conditions including fog and low visibility.
  • The aircraft struck the ground during a low-altitude turn.

Probable cause

The aircraft struck the ground while performing a turn at low altitude under poor visibility conditions.
