Engine failure during takeoff leads to forced landing in Karakalpakstan

No fatalities • Kanlykul, Uzbekistan • Takeoff (climb)

An agricultural aircraft experienced engine power loss shortly after takeoff, resulting in a forced landing and significant damage near Nukus.

What happened

During an agricultural mission for the Sry-Altyn state farm, an An-2 experienced a critical loss of engine power immediately following departure from an airstrip situated approximately 43 km northwest of Nukus. The incident occurred while the aircraft was operating at an altitude of roughly 15 to 20 metres.

In an effort to manage the power loss, the crew initiated an emergency descent into a nearby field. During this forced landing maneuver, the left main landing gear made contact with a dam measuring 2.5 metres in height. The impact caused substantial damage to the airframe.

Findings

  • The primary sequence of events began with the engine losing power shortly after the aircraft left the ground.
  • The collision with the dam during the landing attempt was the direct cause of the structural damage.
  • Despite the severity of the impact, there were zero fatalities and zero injuries reported among the crew members.

Probable cause

The aircraft suffered a loss of engine power during the initial climb phase, necessitating an emergency landing.
