What happened
A scheduled flight operating from Ust-Kara toward Naryan-Mar, which included a planned stop in Karatayka, experienced a critical emergency during its approach. The single engine airplane was transporting twelve people, consisting of ten passengers and two crew members, when the flight encountered severe icing.
Upon encountering these conditions, the crew attempted to divert the flight to Varandey. Despite operating the engine at maximum power, the aircraft was unable to climb higher than 200 metres. Due to the inability to maintain altitude, the captain initiated an emergency landing procedure. The aircraft subsequently crash-landed in a snow-covered region situated approximately 10 km northwest of Karatayka.
Findings
The accident resulted in two fatalities, including the captain, and 10 injuries among the remaining occupants. The primary factor leading to the crash was the severe icing conditions encountered by the crew, which significantly degraded the aircraft's performance and prevented it from climbing.
