An-2 training flight crash near Velyka Vyska

1 fatality • Velyka Vyska, Ukraine • Flight

A training flight involving an Antonov An-2 resulted in a fatal accident near Velyka Vyska after the aircraft struck the ground during a low-altitude maneuver.

What happened

During a training mission departing from Lelekovka, an Antonov An-2 was operating at an altitude of approximately 100 meters under conditions of limited visibility. While navigating the flight path, the trainee pilot, who was conducting his first flight at the controls, unintentionally drifted out of the designated zone. This deviation led to a continuous loss of altitude.

Upon spotting a triangulation tower directly in his path, the trainee pilot executed an abrupt right-hand turn. The instructor attempted to intervene to correct the flight path; however, the intervention occurred too late to prevent the impact. The aircraft struck the ground near kilometer 63 of the railway line, situated close to Velyka Vyska, and settled in an inverted position.

The accident resulted in one fatality among the crew, while the remaining five occupants sustained injuries during the crash.

Findings

Investigations into the accident identified that the primary contributing factors were pilot error and inadequate supervision by the instructor during the critical phase of flight.

Probable cause

The accident was caused by the trainee pilot's navigational error and the instructor's failure to provide timely corrective intervention.
