What happened
On an ongoing cargo mission from Karam to Kazashinskoye, a single-engine airplane was transporting 1,194 kilograms of potatoes along with two pilots and two passengers. During the cruise phase of the flight, the crew notified air traffic control of their intention to divert to Yukhta, though no specific reason for the diversion was provided.
While operating in heavy snowfall, the aircraft impacted trees and caught fire on a mountainside situated approximately 63 km north of Kazashinskoye. Following the loss of radio communication and the failure of the flight to reach its destination, search and rescue operations were launched. These efforts were eventually halted after several days when no debris or survivors were located.
On 21 June 1976, helicopter personnel identified the wreckage site. Investigations revealed that the aircraft struck trees at an altitude of 800 meters, briefly regained some height, but subsequently crashed into a forest area 60 meters further along the slope. The accident resulted in four fatalities.
Findings
At the time of the impact, visibility was estimated to be less than 2 km, which was below established flying minimums. The investigation concluded that the primary factor was the crew's decision to proceed with the flight despite encountering weather conditions below legal limits and failing to return to the departure airport.
