Aircraft crash near Urzhum Airfield during severe icing

2 fatalities • Urzhum, Russia • Flight

A flight operating between Kirov and Plotbishche crashed near Urzhum after encountering extreme weather conditions, resulting in the deaths of both crew members.

What happened

During a repositioning flight traveling from Kirov toward Shurma, an aircraft was operating without any passengers or cargo. While navigating the airspace between Urzhum and Shurma, the crew encountered meteorological conditions that fell below established minimums, characterized by heavy snowfall and significantly reduced visibility.

As the flight progressed, the aircraft experienced intense ice accumulation on its surfaces. Although a plan was made to divert the flight to Kilmez, the decision to alter course was executed too late to avoid the deteriorating environment. Consequently, the aircraft type lost stability and became uncontrollable. The impact occurred in a snow-covered field located approximately 10 kilometers east of Urzhum Airfield, specifically between the Shevnino and Sanatorny areas. Following the crash, the wreckage ignited and was completely destroyed by fire. There were 2 fatalities involving both members of the flight crew. The debris field was discovered by responders on December 21.

Findings

Investigations into the accident determined that the primary factor leading to the loss of control was the severe icing conditions encountered during the flight.

Probable cause

The aircraft experienced a loss of control due to heavy ice accumulation during flight.
