On the morning of the accident, a twin engine aircraft departed from Terán AFB in Tuxtla Gutiérrez at 09:15 local time. The aircraft was conducting a liaison mission and was carrying a total of five people, consisting of two pilots and three passengers.

Approximately 15 minutes after takeoff, the aircraft impacted the slope of Mt Tzontehuitz. The crash site was situated roughly 12 km northeast of San Cristóbal de Las Casas. The impact resulted in five fatalities, with no survivors reported among the crew or passengers.
