Fatal runway excursion and multi-vehicle collision

10 fatalities • Culiacán Rosales, Mexico • Takeoff (climb)

An aircraft accident involving a high-speed runway excursion resulted in ten fatalities and multiple injuries after the plane struck vehicles on a nearby motorway.

What happened

While performing a takeoff roll on runway 02, the aircraft experienced instability once it reached a speed of approximately 100 km/h. The pilot-in-command attempted to initiate the takeoff sequence on two separate occasions, but the aircraft did not respond as expected. After twelve seconds of instability, the captain attempted to abort the takeoff; however, with only 300 metres of runway remaining, the aircraft could not be brought to a halt.

The aircraft exited the airfield perimeter, crossing a boundary fence and entering a motorway. During this excursion, the plane collided with several vehicles on the road, which subsequently led to a fire. The accident resulted in ten fatalities, including three crew members and seven individuals on the ground. Additionally, ten people on the ground sustained serious injuries.

Findings

  • The aircraft became unstable during the initial stages of the takeoff roll.
  • The decision to abort the takeoff was made too late to prevent the aircraft from leaving the runway environment.

Probable cause

The aircraft failed to respond to takeoff attempts, and the late decision to abort the takeoff prevented the crew from stopping before exiting the runway.
