What happened
During an approach to runway 26 at Villahermanosa-Capitán Carlos Rovirosa Pérez Airport, the flight crew encountered significantly reduced visibility caused by low cloud cover. Because the runway could not be visually identified, the captain elected to perform a go-around.
During a subsequent attempt to land, the aircraft continued its descent below the minimum descent altitude (MDA). This resulted in the aircraft type impacting the terrain approximately 3 km short of the runway threshold in a forested area. The impact caused the aircraft to burst into flames. The accident resulted in two fatalities, as both pilots were killed in the crash.
Findings
- The crew operated in conditions of poor visibility due to low-altitude clouds.
- The aircraft descended below the MDA during the second landing attempt, leading to the ground impact.
