Incident Overview
On 24 May 2003 at approximately 1100Z, a Piper PA-28-180 aircraft, registration ZS-ELL, experienced a forced landing in an open field in the Groblersdal area, near Moteti (S25°13’ E029°6’). The aircraft was being operated under a Private license type. According to the South African Civil Aviation Authority incident report, the pilot was not injured, and the only damage sustained was a flat oleo leg (right-hand side).
Sequence of Events
The flight originated from Wonderboom Airport (FAWB) at 08:26Z as a local private flight to the Groblersdal area. During the flight, the pilot became lost. Due to navigational disorientation, the pilot allowed the aircraft to run out of fuel. Subsequently, a forced landing was carried out in an open field. The aircraft ultimately landed at 12:45Z, resulting in a total flight duration of 4 hours and 19 minutes.
Aircraft Damage and Injuries
There were no injuries to the two occupants (1+1 persons on board). The aircraft damage was limited to a flat oleo leg on the right-hand side of the landing gear. According to available records, the aircraft was correctly maintained. No on-site investigation was carried out.
Weather Conditions
At the time of the incident, meteorological conditions reported by the pilot were calm wind, temperature of +11°C, and CAVOK conditions (Ceiling and Visibility OK). This weather was not a contributing factor.
Probable Cause
The probable cause, as determined by the South African Civil Aviation Authority, is that the pilot got lost and allowed the aircraft to run out of fuel, subsequently carrying out a forced landing in an open field.
