A Cessna 172 Skyhawk experienced an engine failure shortly after takeoff from Islamabad International Airport, resulting in a forced landing and aircraft inversion.

What happened

On 16 August 2025, a Cessna 172 R, registration AP-BLO, operated by Askari Flying Academy, was conducting an Instrument Flying training flight departing from Islamabad International Airport (IIAP). Shortly after takeoff from Runway 2lar, at an altitude of approximately 275 feet above ground level, the aircraft suffered a loss of engine power.

The instructor pilot took control of the aircraft and declared a MAYDAY. Due to the low altitude, the crew determined they were unable to return to the runway and instead performed a forced landing in a nearby agricultural field. During the landing sequence, the aircraft touched down at approximately 44 knots and subsequently overturned due to uneven ground, coming to rest in an inverted position.

Both pilots survived the impact with no serious injuries. There was no post-crash fire, though the aircraft sustained extensive structural damage, including a destroyed nose frame and separation of the engine from its mounts. The investigation noted that the trainee pilot was initially trapped by a jammed harness before being assisted out by the instructor.

The investigation

The Bureau of Aircraft Safety Investigation Pakistan (BASIP) conducted an examination of the wreckage, flight data, and operational procedures. Investigators reviewed the aircraft's maintenance logs, meteorological data, and air traffic control communications.
