Incident Overview
On a flight departing from Kiev-Borispol Airport, the crew reported landing gear problems to air traffic control shortly after takeoff. Controllers cleared the aircraft to return to the airport.
Approach and Landing
During the approach, the crew discovered that the left main landing gear had become stuck in its wheel well and could not be extended. Despite this, they elected to continue the descent and proceed with the landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft tipped onto its left side due to the missing gear support. It slid for several dozen meters along the runway before coming to rest. The aircraft sustained damage beyond economical repair. All 147 persons on board evacuated without injury.
Probable Cause
The official investigation determined that the left main landing gear could not be lowered for reasons that remain unknown.
