Runway excursion involving aircraft during takeoff roll

No fatalities • Kutaisi, Georgia • Takeoff (climb)

An aircraft experienced a failed rotation during takeoff, resulting in a runway overrun and several injuries.

What happened

While performing a takeoff roll, the aircraft reached a speed of 255 km/h when the captain attempted to initiate rotation. The aircraft type failed to respond to the pilot's input. In response to the lack of aerodynamic response, the captain aborted the takeoff and applied emergency braking.

Despite the braking efforts, the aircraft could not stop within the available runway length. The vessel overran the end of the runway, resulting in the loss of one main landing gear. The aircraft traveled an additional 781 meters before coming to a complete stop. All 173 occupants were successfully evacuated from the plane, though the incident resulted in 11 injuries.

Findings

Preliminary assessments indicate that the aircraft was overloaded, which caused the center of gravity to be outside of the permitted operational envelope. This weight imbalance rendered the rotation maneuver impossible under the given conditions. The aircraft sustained damage that was determined to be beyond repair.

Probable cause

The aircraft was operated with an improper center of gravity due to being overloaded, preventing successful rotation during takeoff.
