What happened
During an approach to East Midlands Airport, the flight crew encountered heavy snowfall and deteriorating weather. Due to these environmental conditions, the captain initiated a go-around procedure.
While attempting a subsequent landing on runway 10, the aircraft struck the ground approximately 1,000 feet before reaching the designated touchdown zone. The force of the impact caused the nose landing gear to separate from the airframe. The aircraft eventually came to a stop in a snow-covered field, where it broke into two distinct sections.
Despite the severity of the structural failure, all 53 occupants successfully evacuated the wreckage without any reported injuries. The aircraft was determined to be a total loss.
Findings
Investigations into the incident identified that the primary factor was an incorrect approach configuration while operating in adverse weather conditions.
