What happened
During a flight traveling from Brasília to Rio de Janeiro, a four-engine aircraft was transporting several passengers, including the President of Brazil. As the aircraft approached the runway at Santos Dumont Airport, the right main landing gear failed to support the weight of the plane upon touchdown.
This mechanical failure caused the aircraft to settle onto its fuselage. The impact and subsequent movement along the runway resulted in the plane sliding for a distance of several yards before catching fire. Despite the intensity of the flames, all 18 occupants managed to evacuate the wreckage without sustaining any injuries. Following the incident, the aircraft was determined to be a total loss due to the extent of the structural damage.
Findings
Investigations into the accident concluded that the primary factor in the incident was the failure of the right main landing gear at the moment of landing.
