What happened

Approximately 17 minutes following its departure from Jamba Airport, a three-engine airplane was flying at cruising altitude when it was targeted by a Zambian Shenyang J-6 fighter aircraft. During the encounter, the pilot of the fighter jet opened fire on the plane. Following the engagement, the aircraft lost stability and entered an uncontrolled dive, ultimately impacting a field in the Matala region.

All 29 fatalities were recorded as a result of the crash. Investigations conducted by Angolan officials determined that the destruction of the aircraft was the result of a mistake made by the Zambian fighter pilot during the interception.
