What happened
Approximately 17 minutes following its departure from Jamba Airport, a three-engine airplane was flying at cruising altitude when it was targeted by a Zambian Shenyang J-6 fighter aircraft. During the encounter, the pilot of the fighter jet opened fire on the plane. Following the engagement, the aircraft lost stability and entered an uncontrolled dive, ultimately impacting a field in the Matala region.
All 29 fatalities were recorded as a result of the crash. Investigations conducted by Angolan officials determined that the destruction of the aircraft was the result of a mistake made by the Zambian fighter pilot during the interception.
Findings
Official reports from authorities indicate that the primary factor in the loss of the aircraft was the decision by the pilot of the Shenyang J-6 to shoot down the plane.
