Aena unveils expansion plans for Rio de Janeiro-Galeão airport
The Spanish airport operator Aena has set out development plans for Rio de Janeiro-Galeão after taking over operations, including around 1 billion Brazilian real in private projects on the airport site.

Aena has presented its development plans for Rio de Janeiro-Galeão international airport, following its takeover of operations on 6 October 2026. The Spanish airport operator said the plans focus on expanding flight connections, operational procedures, and commercial and logistics activity.
According to Aena, private projects worth roughly one billion Brazilian real, about 160 million euros, are already planned on the airport grounds. They cover hotels, technology companies, aircraft maintenance and logistics. Around 3,860 jobs are expected to be created within the next three years.
Improving Rio de Janeiro's domestic and international connections is a priority. Aena intends to use the airport's place in its Brazilian network to support the development of additional flight routes.
With the takeover of Galeão, Aena now operates 18 airports across ten Brazilian states. Together they handle more than 63 million passengers a year.
