AI-guided Russian drone linked to civilian deaths in Zaporizhzhia

An investigation found that a Russian attack drone operating without radio control or human piloting killed three civilians in Zaporizhzhia in July, in what experts describe as a likely first documented case of an autonomous AI-guided drone causing civilian deaths.

A Russian fixed-wing attack drone with an onboard AI computer killed three civilians in a strike on a gas station in Zaporizhzhia on July 6, according to an investigation cited by aerotime.aero. The dead were named as Tetiana Bubynets, 19, Oleksiy Svirin, 41, and Roman Karpiy, 48.

Ukrainian air-defense officials, drone specialists and forensic investigators who examined the wreckage said the aircraft was a Molniya-type drone fitted with an Nvidia Jetson Orin minicomputer. It flew without a radio-control link. Its onboard software reportedly navigated toward a preset area, then searched for a target matching a stored profile, apparently propane tanks kept at the site.

The drone failed to clear a nearby apartment building. It struck a wall and detonated close to people sheltering below, investigators said. Bubynets died at a hospital; Svirin and Karpiy died of their injuries later.

Ukrainian officials said the drone was part of a group of about six aircraft used in the attack, none of which emitted signals detectable by electronic-warfare systems meant to jam a pilot's control link. No radio antenna was found in the recovered wreckage, investigators said, which supports the assessment that the aircraft operated autonomously.

Experts cited in the investigation described the strike as potentially the first documented instance of an AI-controlled Russian drone causing civilian deaths. The account draws on statements from Ukrainian officials and technical examination of recovered debris rather than confirmation from Russian authorities, who have not been reported as commenting on the claims.
