AirAsia X drops Sydney route, expands Melbourne and Perth services
AirAsia X is ending its Sydney-Kuala Lumpur route, citing higher costs and weaker demand, while boosting capacity to Melbourne and Perth.
AirAsia X will discontinue its route between Sydney and Kuala Lumpur, the airline said. It cited rising costs, softer demand and a broader realignment of its fleet and network as reasons for the decision.
The Airbus A330 aircraft previously deployed on the Sydney service will be redeployed to other routes within the carrier's network.
At the same time, AirAsia is expanding its presence elsewhere in Australia. Flights between Perth and Kuala Lumpur will increase to 14 per week. Melbourne is set to gain a daily connection to Kuala Lumpur starting in December.
The airline is also adding capacity between Perth and Denpasar, lifting frequency to 35 flights per week on that route.
No date was given for the end of Sydney services beyond the announcement itself.
