Animawings files for insolvency and cuts A220 fleet to two aircraft
Romanian carrier Animawings has filed for insolvency in Bucharest and plans to shed six leased Airbus A220-300s, leaving it with two older A320s. The airline cites recurring technical issues with the A220s; media reports also point to unpaid debts.

Animawings, a Romanian private carrier, filed for insolvency at a Bucharest court on September 30, 2026. The filing gives it court-supervised protection from creditors while it tries to stabilise its finances.
The airline also said it will shrink its fleet from eight aircraft to two. Six Airbus A220-300s leased since 2024 will be disposed of. Only the two older A320s will stay.
The owners blamed recurring technical problems that left part of the A220 fleet grounded in recent months. Romanian media reported that the carrier also owes money to several creditors, and that airports in Romania and Greece have begun legal steps to recover unpaid sums.
Those reports said the owners had been talking to investors about selling half the business, including the investment arm of Banca Transilvania, Romania's largest bank. No deal was signed.
Animawings has said it intends to keep flying. The downsizing is still expected to bring a large number of cancellations, with many routes dropped altogether.
In recent years the airline pursued an ambitious expansion, shifting from charter work to a hybrid model with more scheduled flights and competing with flag carrier Tarom on domestic and European routes.
