Avianca A320 diverts to Miami after severe turbulence injures several

An Avianca Airbus A320 flying from Medellín to New York diverted to Miami early on 9 October after severe turbulence. The airline says nine people needed medical care, while local firefighters reported eight injured.

An Avianca Airbus A320 flying from Medellín, Colombia, to New York made an unscheduled landing in Miami in the early hours of Friday, 9 October, after severe turbulence. It touched down shortly after 3am local time.

Nine people needed medical attention, according to the airline: six passengers and three crew members. The local fire service counted eight injured. One of them was taken to a trauma centre with serious injuries, and seven others were taken to hospitals.

Passengers who were not hurt continued to New York later that morning.
