Berlin airport Terminal 1 evacuated after hazardous substance alert

Terminal 1 at Berlin Brandenburg Airport was evacuated on Thursday evening (3 September) after a hazardous substance alert. A woman told a federal police service point that she was carrying a dangerous substance. Emergency services were deployed because the initially unknown substance could not be ruled out as a threat.

The public check-in area of Terminal 1 was closed, and hundreds of passengers had to leave the building. Flight operations continued on a limited basis. S-Bahn rail service was also temporarily suspended. At least one flight from Zurich was diverted to Munich, according to media reports.

The all-clear was given later in the evening. Fire department specialists found no hazardous substances, and the threat was not confirmed. Police reopened the terminal at around 8:45 pm. Passengers were still advised to expect delays.
