Boston Logan asks airlines to tanker fuel as storm blocks deliveries
Boston Logan airport operator MassPort has asked airlines to carry extra fuel into the airport because a storm is preventing tankers from delivering kerosene, while saying existing stocks should cover the weekend.
Airlines flying into Boston have been asked to carry extra fuel for now, the airport operator MassPort said. A storm is keeping tanker ships from delivering kerosene to Boston Logan.
MassPort called the measure a precaution. It said the fuel already on hand should last through the weekend.
Tankering is easier on shorter flights, where aircraft can take on enough additional kerosene for the onward leg. On long-haul services the volume required makes it harder, and intermediate stops to refuel could become necessary.
The storm is already disrupting flight operations in Boston, apart from the fuel supply issue.
