Two and a half hours into the flight, while cruising over Romania, the crew identified a technical problem and decided to return to London. The airline planned to swap aircraft and reschedule departure for 18:00.
As the aircraft approached British airspace, National Air Traffic Services suffered a major equipment failure that grounded all inbound and outbound flights across London's airports. Denied clearance into Heathrow, the jet was vectored to Cardiff Airport, where it landed nearly five hours after its initial departure.
The flight was ultimately cancelled due to crew operating hours expiring and disrupted aircraft positioning. Passengers were left stranded far from their intended destination.
