Discover Airlines has started flying an Airbus A330 with Aeroshark surface film on scheduled services, the Lufthansa subsidiary said. The aircraft, registered D-AIKP, has been operating that way since last week.

The ribbed film, modelled on shark skin, was applied to the fuselage and engine cowlings at Dresden airport in late August. It cuts aerodynamic drag and is meant to reduce fuel use and CO2 emissions by about one percent.

Before entering line service, the aircraft flew several test flights. Discover says this is the first time an airline has used the technology in regular commercial operations.
