easyJet A320 diverts to Gatwick after hydraulic loss
An easyJet Airbus A320 flying from Alicante to Manchester declared a full emergency and landed at London Gatwick after losing its yellow hydraulic system. The aircraft touched down safely and passengers were later flown onward on a replacement jet.
An easyJet flight from Alicante to Manchester diverted to London Gatwick on Saturday after the crew lost the aircraft's yellow hydraulic system, the airline said.
Flight U22014, an Airbus A320-214 registered G-EZOI, left Alicante–Elche Miguel Hernández Airport at 09:10 UTC and climbed to 34,000 feet. About 90 minutes in, the crew found a technical failure in the yellow hydraulic system. They squawked 7700 and turned toward London airspace, asking for an immediate diversion to Gatwick.
Losing hydraulic fluid can affect nose-wheel steering or braking after touchdown, so the airline told air traffic control the aircraft might not be able to taxi under its own power and could block the runway. Luton and Stansted were noted as alternatives if needed.
The jet landed on Runway 26L at Gatwick at 11:34 UTC, slightly ahead of its estimated arrival time. Emergency vehicles met it on the taxiway after it cleared the active runway, and airport fire services inspected the exterior before clearing it to taxi to a remote stand under its own power.
easyJet said the diversion was caused by a technical issue and that a replacement aircraft was arranged to take passengers on to Manchester.
