Edgewing awards 18-month contract to G2E for GCAP fighter electronics
The UK, Italy, and Japan's Global Combat Air Programme has contracted the G2E consortium to continue developing integrated sensing and communications for the future combat aircraft.
The GCAP Electronics Evolution (G2E) consortium has been awarded an 18-month contract by Edgewing to continue work on the integrated sensing and communications system for the tri-national Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) fighter. Edgewing is the joint venture leading the programme, involving BAE Systems, Leonardo, and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement.
G2E comprises Leonardo UK, Leonardo of Italy, Mitsubishi Electric of Japan, and ELT Group of Italy. The consortium's interim general manager, Andrew Howard, said the award reflects progress toward becoming a single international entity.
The electronics work is intended to give the future combat aircraft advanced sensor fusion and data handling capabilities. In July 2026, a £4.6 billion ($6.1 billion) contract was awarded to cover completion of the concept and assessment phase by the end of 2027.
Detailed design work will follow, ahead of an operational system. The partner nations aim to field the aircraft by 2035.
