France orders eight Airbus U050 Capa-X drones after trials

France's Aeronautical Maintenance Directorate, DMAé, has ordered eight Airbus U050 Capa-X uncrewed aircraft. The purchase covers four systems, each with two aircraft. Under the Light Tactical Drone System evaluation program, known as SDTL, two systems will go to the French Navy and two to the French Army. Deliveries are expected in 2027. Airbus did not disclose the contract value.

The order follows an initial Capa-X system acquired by the French armed forces in late 2025. Several branches of the military tested it. During evaluation, the Capa-X flew for seven hours while carrying two payloads and operating at ranges up to 100 kilometers, about 62 miles.

According to Airbus, the aircraft met the SDTL program's requirements. The company said it can be transported using two pickup trucks. The U050 has a maximum takeoff weight of 120 kilograms and can carry up to 20 kilograms. Its long-wing configuration has a wingspan of six meters. It can take off and land conventionally or vertically, so no runway is needed.

The drones ordered by France will initially carry an electro-optical sensor for imagery intelligence and a signals intelligence capability. Airbus said other sensors and mission equipment can be added later as requirements change. The company lists possible roles including intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, target tracking, communications relay, and electronic warfare.
