An El Al Boeing 777-200 ER aborted its landing approach at New York-JFK on Sunday, 11 October, after another pilot reported a dead animal on the runway.

Flight LY7 from Tel Aviv had been cleared for runway 04R when the report came in. A controller told the crew to turn right onto a heading of 130 degrees and climb to 2,000 feet. The pilots did not fully read back the instruction at first. They later asked again about the heading and instead reported climbing to 4,000 feet.

According to the account, the right turn was apparently delayed even after the controller repeated the instruction. That brought the aircraft into proximity with another plane that was taking off.

Radio recordings also show several misunderstandings between the cockpit and air traffic control. The Boeing 777 landed safely in New York later.
